What is shale oil vs crude oil

21 Aug 2016 The spread between WTI and Brent can have a dramatic impact on shale- producer profitability.

Oil shale is a misnomer because kerogen isn't crude oil, and the rock holding the kerogen often isn't even shale. Liquid crude oil consists of organic material—plant and animal remains—that's been exposed to heat and pressure over millions of years. Shale is just a type of rock. It's mostly made up from fine grains of mud, clay, and other minerals. Crude is a generic name for crude, unrefined oil as it comes from the ground. Brent is a specific grade of oil that comes from the North Sea. It is a light (low density) sweet (low sulphur) oil. As far as the quality of oils goes, shale oil is pretty crummy oil. It needs a lot more refining (mostly something called "hydrogenation" which adds more hydrogen to the molecules) to be turned into gasoline or diesel or whatnot. Crude oil refers to petroleum that's liquid that gets pumped out of the ground. U.S. shale oil output is surging, but American refineries can't process much more of the light crude, according to Morgan Stanley. There are also limited export opportunities for U.S. shale, which means light oil may soon have to trade at a discount to compete overseas. Crude oil in the Midland, Texas, area, the epicenter of the U.S. shale boom, slumps to about $40 a barrel. At that price, crude is selling below the price that many drillers need to bring on new wells at a profit. Prices need to remain low to heap real pain on Permian drillers, Shale oil compares well to gas oil crude fraction. Shale oil can be viable alternative of crude oil. West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, is the most common oil-price benchmark for domestically produced crude. It is also the underlying commodity of oil futures contracts traded on the NYMEX exchange.

That especially goes for the trillions of barrels of oil shale beneath Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. When it comes to the Green River Formation, we're talking about finely-grained sedimentary rock that holds a significant amount of kerogen. Kerogen, unfortunately, is not crude oil.
